My two sons (aged 12) recently asked to go to town with a few friends on a Sunday afternoon, normal behaviour for a child in Year 7 at secondary school. So I said ‘Yes’.
However, the thing most parents dread happens.
I was in a shop on the outskirts of town when my phone rings. It was one of my boys telling me his brother was in a fight. Then the phone went dead.
I felt the blood draining from my face and a feeling of complete helplessness washed over me. I tried calling my son back – no answer! I have an app on my phone that tracks the whereabouts of my children’s phones. So after checking where they were, I headed to in that direction. Just as I reached my car the phone ring again and that time it’s my son who had been involved in the incident. Thankfully he was not hurt, just very shaken.
I will not go into the details of the incident other than to say that it was an unprovoked attack by another child older than him.
My reason for sharing this is to highlight the importance of giving your children the skills to keep them safe. As a parent we invest so much time, money and energy in a child’s education including their social and psychological wellbeing. BUT have you considered their education in self-protection from the dangers on the streets where we live? Luckily I had and my children have trained in martial arts for several years and therefore do know how to protect themselves.
When I look back on that day it scares me to think about what could have happened had they not been able to defend themselves. My son would have been a victim for sure.
Many parents insist their children learning to swim as it is considered to be a necessary life-saver and I agree. However, I also believe martial arts can be a life-saver too!
No-one knows what is around the corner, so prepare your children and give them the best chance in having a long and fulfilled life in the world in which we live.
